Every year, Boston Bhangra puts on a world-class bhangra dance competition. For the last few years, this event has taken place at the Orpheum Theatre, in downtown Boston.
The historic theatre holds ~3,000 people who are there eager to see the best in bhangra dance from around North America. As part of the annual event, I design these print pieces, along with other multimedia elements, to get the crowd excited for what they are about to see. The event is a sell out every year, and attracts a very diverse audience that reflects Boston’s love of exciting dance. Read more…

I was asked to design a poster to advertise and promote a popular Boston conference. The event is put on by TiE Boston.
The print piece was on thick 11×17 paper and was distributed throughout the Boston area, including colleges, to draw local attendees. Design sample shown after the jump. Read more…

As part of my role on the executive board of directors for Boston Bhangra, I created this brochure design. It is for the program guide that we handed out to our sold out crowd at the 2007 Boston Bhangra Competition.
To go along with this design, I complemented it with a set of on-screen material to kickoff the program and say thanks to our many volunteers. Design samples after the jump. Read more…

What’s an Agile organization to do? People at the top need ‘more’, Agile team members are well intentioned, but the organization says they’re not getting the delivered value that they need from the team.
Back in February 2008, I was part of a class with Jeff Sutherland to become a CSM (Certified Scrum Master). During that class, we found ourselves tasked with completing a series of 3 minute sprints and delivering the most value after 3 sprints. Through that task, I devised a simple approach to come up with a computed business value (CBV) effectively in a quick way that you may find useful to add to your sprint planning efforts.

While not an entirely new topic in design in 2009, I’ve started to look seriously at the pros of using a grid system. Objections typically come to grid systems over their constraints and that the web would all look the same if every site was built from a grid.
I disagree. Grid systems provide an excellent framework to rapidly prototype new design directions quickly, and have a pretty natural fit within an agile organization that lives its charter to deliver more value more often to their stakeholders. Further, while the learning curve is a bit heavy to understand somebody else’s CSS and markup, that pain occurs everyday in design shops when new designers come online. A good grid system should have very consistent naming conventions and should automate HTML hacks so that designers can focus on design. When designers can be freed from the pains of repetitive CSS I believe they are able to concentrate their energies on creative problem solving.
My current grid system of choice is http://www.960.gs – which after some ‘competitive shopping’ seems to fulfill most of my needs with the least amount of technical hurdles to jump through. Google’s EMastic also sounds interesting, particularly in the speed department.
I’ll be developing some mockup sites to test both frameworks in the coming weeks. I look forward to your feedback at that time.

Boston Bhangra was invited to perform at Bhangra Fusion X. It is held every year in Detroit, MI. We rocked the stage and had an absolute blast! Every other team we met was really nice. It was fantastic to have the teams cheering for us from the crowd! Glad everyone loved the Gaddi gimmick, too! :) See you next year!!
The video isn’t available yet, but we hope to get one soon.

I’ve just started to read, “Imagining India”, from Nandan Nilekani. Since my first trip to India I’ve thoroughly embraced the many cultures of the land. I look forward to reading his ideas to help India be a thriving global power for centuries to come.
I think there are tremendous opportunities for the struggling US industries to learn from the innovative ideas coming from India. I believe IBM now has 70,000 employees in India suggesting that there is tremedous intellectual capital to be harnessed.
